Lovebird during vacation?

hi i am thinking about getting a lovebird, but one major concern is what will happen when i go on vacation. if the lovebird has no mate, and is very bonded to me, will it be ok if im gone for a few weeks? i read online somewhere that the bird will not eat or may even die......advice?
