My friend's adoptive dad won't let her find her real parents?

To be honest, there's probably not much she can do until she's eighteen. I don't know whether her dad is over-controlling, or genuinely concerned about her, or maybe threatened by the idea of competing with the birth parents. I do think, however, that telling her they just gave her up is rather cruel, as well as not necessarily true.
