So... Did I get a ticket?

Was pulled over the other night for running a red light. Officer took my license and registration; brought it back and said "Im going to write you a ticket. Watch intersections". He walked away; got in his car and left. Later on, a friend asked to see the ticket, so I told them I didn't have it yet (I kinda just figured I'd get it in the mail: Have never received a ticket before) My friend laughed and told me if the officer didn't give me a ticket then, that he wasn't planning on doing so. Would they mail it, or is this really unheard of? Maybe I have nothing to worry about after all?
