Who offered the most realistic ideas in the 1970's within American society: Republicans or Federalists?

I need your help! I have to write a 5 page paper from an argumentative stand-point as to which one of these parties ultimately had better stand-points/party platforms. My professor has not been very approachable nor helpful when trying to ask for resources to gather information on the parties and our textbook is too vague.
